September is National Preparedness Month

9/19/2019 (Permalink)

Surprise! I bet you didn’t know September is recognized as National Preparedness Month! Different types of disasters and emergencies happen throughout the year in homes, businesses and communities. The goal of acknowledging National Preparedness Month is to remind everyone to take steps to be better prepared for them.

How Prepared are You?

There are many suggested ways to prepare for a disaster or an emergency event. Listed below are just a few of the ways you can be prepared.

Home Owners:

  • Install smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors
  • Practice fire evacuation plans and tornado drills
  • Assemble an emergency kit
  • Learn basic life-saving skills such as CPR and First Aid
  • Develop a family communication plan

Schools and Businesses:

  • Develop an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) through SERVPRO . In the event of a disaster, this profile will help minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action already in place.
  • Learn the evacuation routes for the area
  • Review insurance policies
  • Set up an emergency savings account. The unexpected expense of a disaster can be devastating.

Disaster preparedness can seem overwhelming at times. These are just of some basic guidelines to help you be more prepared in an emergency.  While you may not be able to follow every suggestion, doing even a few can help!
