How Does Homeowner's Insurance Cover You from Fire and Smoke Damage at Your Warren Home?

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

Picture is a close up of a paper insurance policy Fire insurance coverage is included in most standard homeowner’s insurance policies. It's one of the named perils covered in the HO-2 coverage.

Let’s talk insurance. I know. Not the most exciting subject by any means. But necessary. Did you know that SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County will directly work with your insurance company in the case of a fire loss? Allow us to help explain your coverage to you, a little better, in layman's terms.

Does my policy cover fire? Fire insurance coverage is included in most standard homeowner’s insurance policies. It's one of the named perils covered in HO-2, or "named perils" coverage and is also included in HO-3, or "broad form" coverage. It also covers fire from perils that are excluded on your policy. For an example, if an earthquake knocks down an electrical line and it falls on your home and starts fire---even though earthquake damage is excluded…the fire damage would be included.

Smoke damages items too. Personal belongings in your home such as furniture, carpet, and clothing can be harmed and ruined by smoke and soot. These types of things are also included in your policy as well.

Coverage depends on your limits and deductibles. But it can get confusing. Take a look at this example from Value Penguin. “Suppose your home's structure is worth $200,000 and your belongings inside are worth an additional $100,000. If you had $300,000 worth of homeowner’s insurance with a $1,000 deductible, you would receive $299,000 from your insurance company if your house burned down and all property inside was destroyed. If you had only $200,000 worth of coverage, you'd only receive payment up to that limit, but if you had $400,000 of coverage, you would still be paid $299,000.”
