The last few decades have seen very rapid growth in technology and equipment in all industries, and the restoration industry is certainly no exception. With such advancements made, jobs are being completed faster, response time has decreased vastly, and overall operations have become more efficient. These things benefit restoration companies and the customer, in more than one way. We will be touching on a few of these aspects and how advanced equipment affects the industry today:

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Specialized drying equipment is used to recognize, measure, and inspect a property’s moisture levels. Infrared cameras are one advancement that aids in detecting water through materials like walls, ceilings, and floors.

Water Extraction Equipment

To speed the drying process as much as possible, restoration professionals use powerful extraction equipment, like submersible and gas-powered pumps. While, truck-mounted and portable extraction units can be used to do the same thing.

Drying Equipment

Today, industrial sized air movers and dehumidifiers are used to extract all remaining moisture from ceilings, walls, and floors. High speed air movers evaporate water at a much higher rate than ever before.

Weather Watches and Warnings in Trumbull County

3/24/2020 (Permalink)

image of tornado and lightning in the sky During severe weather watches and warnings, it’s very important to have a media source available to receive alerts and updates.

During severe weather watches and warnings, it’s very important to have a media source available to receive alerts and updates. Whether it be radio or TV or a smart hand-held device, be sure to have a backup plan available in case severe weather knocks out power.

News, media and weather alert services will commonly broadcast the inclement weather watches and warnings in a variety of ways. It’s important to know the differences in a ‘watch’ and a ‘warning’ since they are both quite common.

First, lets get a formal definition of a ‘watch.’ A watch is issued when the surrounding atmospheric conditions are conducive for severe weather to develop. Watches are important and demand your attention but are not as urgent as a warning.

Secondly, but nonetheless important, are ‘warnings.’ A warning informs you that imminent, dangerous weather is looming. The National Weather Service issues a warning when radar has detected severe weather or an eyewitness reports seeing an event such as a tornado, a severe thunderstorm, flooding, etc. A warning means you are in immediate danger and you should seek shelter immediately.

Here is a brief definition of some of the common watches and warnings we hear frequently:

  • Tornado Watch:When conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop in the immediate area.
  • Tornado Warning: When radar has indicated a strong rotation capable of producing a tornado at any time, or a trained spotter has reported a funnel cloud or tornado. It is recommended to take cover immediately. Stay tuned in for updates.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch: When conditions exist for severe thunderstorms can easily develop.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning:  When a thunderstorm produces large hail 1 inch or larger in diameter and/or wind speeds exceeds 58 mph.
  • Flash Flood Watch: When flash flooding is possible, even if severe weather isn’t in your immediate area.
  • Flash Flood Warning: When flash flooding of rivers, streams, or urban areas is already occurring.

If you should suffer from water damages following any of these weather disasters, please call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County at 330-392-6355 for your restoration needs. We are a 24/7 emergency services business with a quick response time and we're always ‘Here to Help.’

As most of us do during the winter months, a homeowner in Cortland, OH went south to vacation in the warm Florida sunshine! As she was enjoying her time on vacation, she had no idea her sump pump in her basement had overflown and caused several inches of water to fill her basement floor.

Late Season Storms and What Can Happen to Your Warren, OH Home

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

image of snowplow truck clearing off roads during a winter storm Winter storms pose several problems for homeowners if left unattended.

Northeast Ohio statistics from Dec 1, 2019 to Feb 29, 2020, which by definition is ‘Meteorological Winter,’ was the 4th warmest on record and about 2 feet below average on snowfall. There is currently less than a 20% ice coverage across the Great Lakes.

March 1st represented the first day of ‘Meteorological Spring.’ With Northeast Ohio averaging 16 inches of snow over the span of March, April and May for the last 127 years, there is likely some snow in our future.

Historically, spring is an active weather season. As we exit February, wet days and periodic warm and cold spells are still expected. So, what can we expect if a late winter storm hits Northeast Ohio communities?

As home and business owners, here are some last-minute tips to help prevent damage and keep families and employees safe.

Avoid Ice Dams – When the heat from your home causes ice to melt in the middle of the roof and it drips to the edge where it refreezes near the edge, an ice dam is created and can lead to leaks in your roof, ceilings and walls. If icicles hang from your roof, that’s a sign of ice dams.

  • To help protect against this, keep the attic no more than 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature.
  • Seal around light fixtures and ceiling fans to prevent warm air from escaping

Make Sure Pipes Are Warm – Winter is pipe burst season! The water in the pipes in attics, basements and behind cabinets can freeze. To prevent these pipes from bursting, try these tips.

  • Wrap the cold pipes in insulation
  • Open cabinets to expose the pipes to warmer air
  • Let the faucet drip slowly so that there is a flow of water running through the pipes

Invest in a Gutter Guard System – Or, if you want to keep costs down, clean your gutters so water doesn’t accumulate due to clogging.  Also, you can try these other preventative measures:

  • Check down spouts to make sure that water is being diverted away from the home or building properly
  • Use caulk or weather stripping to lessen the draft from doors and windows
  • Make sure you disconnect any garden hoses and store in a warmer climate.

Consider Investing in A Generator – This is a long-term investment and something to keep in mind. Insurance companies may offer discounts for those that have them. You can also expect it to be an additional heat and power source for:

  • Sump Pumps
  • Security Alarms
  • Fire Alarms

Here to Help with Commercial Fires in Warren, Ohio

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

firefighters with hose extinguishing large building fire Call our team of fire restoration professionals and we will help make any damage “Like it never even happened.”

When your commercial building incurs a fire, you may be faced with lots of emotions, questions, and decisions to make. Recently, we received a call from a commercial property owner going through this exact process.

Read below to find out how SERVPRO was able to assist the business owner during their time of stress and need.

It was an early Sunday afternoon and I received a call from a business owner who was frantic. He walked into his building that morning with a feeling of helplessness as he examined the fire damage that had occurred overnight. Although the structural damage was mild, there was a considerable amount of soot and smoke damage throughout the facility. I assured the caller we would provide an immediate response and assist them every step of the way throughout this daunting process.

What Next?

Upon arriving on the scene, I met with the customer and toured their labor of love. The facility was not huge, it’s run by a handful of wonderful people whom all appear to be family but are not. Each of them looking at me for a determination, a timeline, hope! “How bad is it?” “Can we continue production?” “Will we be out of work?” “How can we help?”

These are just a few of the questions swirling around. It was in this exact moment that I start doing what I do best and initiating what SERVPRO does best. I begin to answer their questions. By listening intently, I learned what was most important to them and what priorities were at the top of their list.

Armed with their concerns and an understanding of how important their facility was to them, I began to plan, guide, recommend, project and most of all disperse resources. Almost immediately, the SERVPRO crews mobilize with equipment and begin their efforts to make the damage “Like it never even happened.”

More Than Just A Job

The customers were looking at me for answers… regarding insurance, lost wages, lost revenue.

“How are we going to heat the building?”  “What if the pipes freeze?”

SERVPRO has an abundance of state-of-the-art resources available. From skilled technicians, equipment, technology, tools and vendors. All designed to assist in making every restoration project a seamless one.  So, when the factory needs heat, SERVPRO heats it. When the heaters need fuel, SERVPRO fuels the heaters. If the pipes are frozen, SERVPRO has plumbers on call to repair that also.

As for the smoke and soot I previously mentioned, the highly trained professionals at SERVPRO will meticulously clean and deodorize every square inch regardless of how big or small the area. While doing so, we also assist in helping the customer maintain a normal flow of their day to day operations by using containment. As the project progresses, I’m thrilled just being a part of assisting these amazing people.

SEVRPRO is always here to help. When fire or water strike, we help your get back to normal as quickly as possible, as thoroughly as you need! Call our team of professionals and we will also help you make any damage “Like it never even happened.”

Preventing House Fires in Southern Trumbull County | National Burn Awareness Week

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

graphic explaining Burn Awareness Week 2020 The American Burn Association has recognized February 2-8, 2020 as “Burn Awareness Week” with this year’s theme being Contact Burns

The American Burn Association has recognized February 2-8, 2020 as “Burn Awareness Week” with this year’s theme being Contact Burns.

According to a National Fire Protection Association report issued in October of 2019, just over one-quarter (27%) of reported fires in the US are home fires, while four out of every five injuries reported had home fires at the root of the incident.

There are five main causes to all home fires and fire casualties: cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials. Over the five-year period of 2013-2017, fires caused an annual average of 2,620 deaths, and 11,220 civilian injuries with $6.9 billion in property damage.

Fire prevention is the single most important aspect of educating people on fire and safety. Fire prevention can be categorized into two main categories: Home and Commercial.

Residential

  • Smoking Indoors – Smoking is a huge fire hazard, with several deaths per year being traced back to people lighting a cigarette near a source of gas and or falling asleep with one in their hands.
  • Cooking – In 2016, cooking was responsible for 6.6% of all house fire deaths. When preparing food, it is never smart to leave the stove unattended.
  • Maintain Appliances and Electrical Wiring – When moving to a new place be sure to have your wiring checked by a professional. Faulty wiring and electrical malfunction resulted in 9.6% of all fatal building fires.

Commercial

  • Supervise and Clean Work Areas – To thoroughly prevent fires, adequate supervision can be required. Any minor mistake can result in a fire especially with no supervision. The work space also needs to be cleaned sufficiently to prevent an accumulation of combustible materials.
  • Workplace Machinery – To fully protect your workplace, machinery that is in constant use needs to be checked and maintained often. Failure to do so, puts the machine at risk of malfunctioning leading to fire and employee injury.
  • Proper Fire Training – Employees in specific industries should be required to complete a fire prevention course. Making this practice a yearly requirement can be very beneficial in the prevention of commercial fires.

The highly trained and licensed experts at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County understand how important your home/business is to you. While in the hustle and bustle of life, a fire and a preventable one at that can really be a burden.

We pride ourselves in being faster to any size disaster! Our experts will help guide you through a crisis like this and eventually make it “Like it never even happened.”

Sick Building Syndrome: Myth or Reality?

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

cartoon building and germ spores with the text "myth or reality: sick building syndrome" If you have the feeling that your property may be suffering from ‘Sick Building Syndrome’, call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County

Do you find yourself suffering from headaches, fatigue or difficulty concentrating while at work? Are your co-workers complaining of dry, itchy, irritated skin? Do these symptoms seem to appear while you are isolated in a building or even a single room at the workplace?

Most people do not easily correlate their symptoms as work/building related at all. They may just write it off as an inexplicable coincidence.  But likely, it’s not a mere coincidence. There is a phenomenon known as ‘Sick Building Syndrome’, and it can be responsible for the symptoms noted earlier. The severity of the symptoms may be in direct correlation to the amount of time spent in that building or room.

As a commercial restoration company, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County specializes in keeping buildings clean and free of chemical or biological contaminants. Some of the reasons ‘Sick Building Syndrome’ occurs has to do with a buildup of indoor and outdoor contaminants.

Indoor causes can stem from carpet adhesives beginning to deteriorate, pesticides may accumulate, and antiquated wood products may begin to breakdown. Outdoor causes are usually pollutants stemming from ventilation problems within the building resulting in poor air quality. Mother nature can play a role in ‘Sick Building Syndrome’ as well. Animal infestation, mold resulting from water leaks and air borne pollen can compound the issue.

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County can assist in the effort to bring your building back to a healthier status. As experts in Odor Removal and Deodorization, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County uses IICRC Standards to identify and eliminate these odors.

If you have the feeling that your property may be suffering from ‘Sick Building Syndrome’, call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County at (330) 392-6355 to schedule an appointment. This can be a ‘tricky’ undertaking, so leave the restoration to us!

How We Can Prevent Holiday Home Hazards

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

wires tangled with cords unorganized Holiday Fire Safety Tips from the leaders in fire restoration!

“Wires here…wires there… wires, wires everywhere!”  A phrase that conjures up an image in your mind I’m sure. If your home is anything like mine this time of year, it consists of ‘rigged’ holiday decorations that somehow manage to generate the holiday spirit.

Regardless, the holiday season is certainly the most enjoyable time of year. Unfortunately, due to the excessive amount of electrical home décor being used, unexpected house fires are all too common. There are ways to avoid this danger and most of these preventative measures only require a little common sense.

To help prevent house fires, keep the following in mind throughout the holiday season:

  • When it comes to caring for your live Christmas tree, the org says to keep it watered and far away from any heat sources (fireplaces, radiators, temporary heaters). When decorating the tree, consider LED lighting. They use a lot less electricity and are much safer.
  • Food is a big part of any holiday. Your oven and cook top will be humming with activity. Whether you have a gas or electric oven/stove, fires can erupt as a result of grease buildups. Keep these cooking units as clean as possible. A drip pan may be a good idea to prevent the grease from accumulating.
  • Electric outlets and power strips tend to get overwhelmed in the effort to create the desired decorative look. Surge strips should accompany extension cords as they will shut off itself should it becomes too heated. Finally, try not to pile presents and other decorations on the extension cords.

Other areas of focus to consider during the holiday season are:

  • The National Safety Council estimates thousands of people will visit the ER as a result of holiday related injuries. The majority result from holiday decorating accidents and food handling. Did you know… Mistletoe and holly berries are potentially poisonous if ingested.
  • Also, food poisoning is prevalent during the holidays due to cross contamination and the large amount of food being handled and prepared. Learning to properly store, prepare and serve food safely can help prevent food poisoning. Leftovers need to be put away properly and immediately.
  • Be selective when picking gifts for young children. Toys are now age-rated for safety reasons. Toys for children under the age of 3 are designed to be free of small pieces to help prevent choking. When buying for children under the age of 10, try to avoid any toys that require electricity.
  • Finally, and most importantly, be sure to check the batteries in you smoke detectors at least twice a year. The holiday season is a good time to insure a safe environment for guests and family. It also insures a great start to the new year!

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County can be reached at (330) 392-6355. We are available 24/7 and always happy to help!

Christmas Tree Fire Prevention in Trumbull County

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

closeup of christmas tree with red bulbs hanging Happy holidays from the team at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County!

The holiday season is a wonderful time for decorations and bright lights. Decorating Christmas trees has been a family tradition for many years. Whether you have an artificial tree or enjoying the smell of fresh pine throughout your home, it's important to be aware of the potential safety hazards present during the holiday season.

Statistics show that many fires over the holiday seasons are attributed to Christmas trees.

Fire Safety Tips:

  1. When picking out an artificial tree, it is important to pick one that has a “Flame Retardant” label on it. This indicates that the tree will resist burning and should extinguish in a quick amount of time.
  2. If you are looking for a real tree, pick a tree with more green needles than brown. If you see more brown needles while the tree is being shaken out, this is an indicator that the tree is dry and could possibly catch fire quickly. Regardless of what kind of tree you get, leave it three feet away from any heat source in the home.
  3. Make sure your tree does not block any exits in the event of an emergency.
  4. When you are ready to start decorating your tree, try to avoid connecting more than three strands of lights.
  5. Inspect all wires for signs of fraying and exposed wire.
  6. Finally, shut all lights off prior to going to bed and when you leave. Setting a timer can be helpful.

Be sure to keep these safety tips in mind as you prepare for Christmas this year. If you do however find yourself in need of fire restoration services - we are always here to help!

Happy holidays from the team at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County!

Saving Your Home from the Storm

11/27/2019 (Permalink)

It's no secret that your home can incur an overwhelming amount of damage from fire disasters; but what about water?

It's the middle of the night you wake up to the noise of water running. You get out of bed and quickly come to the realization that a water line has broken. What do you do?

Many property owners take the necessary steps to plan and prevent a fire from happening in their property but what do you do in the event of unexpected water leaks?

Water leaks can occur from pipe burst after freezing temperature, shifts in your home's foundation, and corrosion.

What to do if your pipes leak:

The first thing you need to do is shut off the source so that the water stops. It is important to ensure that the water stops in response to turning off the valve. In example, the supply line to the sink has burst. You turn off the valve to stop the water, but what if the water keeps spraying all over???

It is not uncommon for old shut off valves to go bad to the point that when you try shutting them off, it doesn't work. If this is the case in your property, you will need to locate the main water valve. This valve is usually located at the water meter for city water. If you have a well, it is typically located by your pressure tank.

In the event of a water disaster in your Trumbull County home,  you want to limit the amount of water leaking QUICK. By locating the source of the leak and shutting off your main water valve, you are well on your way to recovery.

Is you Trumbull County property losing a battle with water damage? Call us immediately at 330-392-6355.

A quick response can be key to a fast and affordable restoration process. We are always here to help!

Fire Restoration Specialists in Trumbull County

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

bed frame with soot damaged drywall and carpeting With decades of experience SERVPRO has the equipment and passion it takes to make any size fire damage, ”Like It Never Even Happened”

Fire disasters are not events that any family wants to deal with. Surviving a fire is a traumatic experience for anyone to go through, but it is helpful to know a little bit about the restoration process in case you ever do run into this type of issue. There are a few different steps that will facilitate the restoration process, and each is critical to your family getting back up on their feet after a fire.

At a time when you feel like you may not know which way to turn, a fire restoration specialist – like our experienced professionals at SERVPRO – can step in and take the lead by offering services such as:

  • Emergency Services – After a fire you may need immediate temporary fixes such as Roof repairs, board ups and tarp.
  • Water Extraction and Restoration – Water damage is the last thing you think of when it comes to a fire. However, many times, fires are put out by firefighters pumping thousands of gallons of water to douse it, causing water damage to a home.
  • SERVPRO will first and foremost work to remove the water from the home. Leaving water in a home for a long period of time can result in mold growing which can make the home more dangerous to live in.
  • Debris Clean up - Cleaning debris allows the restoration company to get an even better look at what damage was done so that they can begin to assess an action plan to determine what is salvageable and non-salvageable
  • Smoke and Soot Removal – Soot is a fine black to brown powder formed through incomplete combustion. The process that forms it also makes it slightly sticky, and it can be found clinging to things which can be commonly found in and on horizontal and vertical surfaces, walls and inside HVAC system ducting. Leftover smoke and soot following a fire can adversely affect your health. Children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk when exposed to smoke and soot. Smoke and soot can also take a toll on your personal items resulting in unseen damage to your home’s structure. The cleanup of smoke and soot is time sensitive. Acidic in nature, it effects each surface of your home differently, rapidly taking its toll unless quickly and carefully addressed. SERVPRO performs soot removal in your residence, rooting it out even in the hard-to-reach places.

5 Ways to Prepare Your Trumbull County Homes for Storms

11/22/2019 (Permalink)

photo of road sign with text "are you ready" storm in the background of the sign SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is here to help 24/7 for any and all storm and water emergencies.

The North East Ohio and North West Pennsylvania areas have seen some amazing storms this year. These storms have brought record rain fall, hail, damaging winds and flooding.

No one can predict if this type of weather is the new “norm” or if we simply had an unusually rough spring and summer. However, what we can do is take steps to insure we are prepared for storm events.

Here are some helpful tips to better prepare you in a storm event:

  1. Assemble a “storm tote.” This tote contains flashlights, candles, batteries and a car charger for the cell phone. It sounds simple but it can make a huge difference when a storm hits and the power goes out. You may want to include a few small tools as well.
  1. Take a walk around your home and take inventory of the following things:
  • Are your gutters clean and flowing freely? Do they need repaired?
  • Do you have any branches that are dying or low hanging that may damage the house in a storm?
  • Are there any voids or cracks in the earth around the foundation of the home? Look for areas that water intrusion can easily take place in a storm event.
  • How is the caulking around the windows? Does it need repaired?
  • Is the roof in need of repair? Check shingles and flashing.
  • Do you have a sump pump? Is it working properly? Has it been serviced (yes, they need serviced!) Do you have a battery backup? (batteries need serviced annually as well)
  • Are the drains around your home clear of leaves and debris?
  1. Consider having the drains around your home “jet cleaned” on a regular basis. This helps prevent unwanted drain backups.
  1. Please remember to call your insurance agent and review your coverage limits. Is your coverage enough if you should experience a water loss?
  1. Most importantly, in the event of a loss, time is crucial. The quicker you call SERVPRO, the quicker we can respond and begin mitigating damages. This gives you a much better chance of saving things in your home as SERVPRO makes it, “Like it never even happened.”

Keeping Your Pets Safe in a Home Fire in Howland, OH

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

roof of house engulfed in flames with smoke coming from the sides SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County wants to help keep your family safe and recover as soon as possible from any fire, water, or storm damage.

“A dog is a man’s best friend.” For most people, their pets are more than just an animal they keep inside their house. Pets often become a valued, loved, and cared for companion by members of the whole family. You probably have given some thought and planning into how you will keep your family safe in case of a fire, but do you have a safety plan for your pets?

In case of a fire, your family members should always be your first concern, but your pets can be part of your plan rather than an afterthought. Some thought should be given to protect their well-being in advance.

Tips for Emergency Pet Preparation:

  • Keep all shots and vaccinations up to date and keep records in a portable firebox. You can also store records on your phone or iPad using apps like Dropbox.
  • Make sure the person responsible for pet safety in a fire knows how to get them out of the house safely. It is recommended this person an adult, rather than a child or teenager.
  • Have an emergency bag for your pet with your pet’s normal food, toys, medications, and maybe a small blanket.
  • Take preventative measures by using only flame-less candles, and removing any stove top or oven control knobs that pets or small children could accidentally turn.

Tips for Evacuation:

  • Preparation is key. Each person in the home should be assigned another person or a buddy to help everyone get out of the house safely. This is a good idea for your pets as well. Assign someone to making sure the pets get out of the house safely.
  • Run practice fire evacuation drills. This helps everyone in your family learn how to get out of the house quickly. Include your pets in this drill and make sure everyone knows the plan for pet safety.

Following a fire emergency, the trauma of smoke and fire damage can be overwhelming for the whole family and your pets. The faster the cleanup is completed, the faster everyone in the family can begin to heal and recover. If your family, or business is suffering from fire damage, please call your local restoration experts.

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County wants to help keep your family safe and recover as soon as possible from any fire, water, or storm damage. We are only one phone call away! Contact us any time, day or night and we will be there to help!

Hardwood Floors and Furniture Restoration in Warren,OH

Hardwood floors are a great addition to any home and can boost its overall value, as well as, increasing aesthetic appeal. Additionally, real wooden furniture can last a lifetime and generally carries an overall nicer appearance. In either case, water damage can be an overwhelming and compromise the wood.

Water damage can occur from cold drinks on a hot day, innocent children, clumsiness, pet accidents, broken appliances, and severe weather such as storms and heavy rainfall.

When it comes to furniture, dressers and coffee tables, they can easily get damaged by water or other liquid products. To help protect your wooden furniture from water damage follow these steps:

Materials Needed: A damp rag, stirring stick, bristle brush, sandpaper, Naphthapolyurethane

Step 1:  Use a damp rag to clean off the dusty surface

Step 2: Stir the polyurethane with a stick without shaking the can. Be sure to mix in all the material that may have settled at the bottom of the can.

Step 3: Dip about one inch of the brush into the polyurethane and begin running the in one direction along the dresser or piece of wooden furniture.

Another way to apply the polyurethane is with a rag to prevent air bubbles, but you need to thin the product by adding the same amount of Naphtha.

Step 4: To smooth out any bumps or bubbles, rub wet sand paper in a circular motion on the wood. Test a small section of the surface first, if it starts to “ball up,” the surface is not dry enough yet. Wait at least 30 minutes.

Following this process should help eliminate any water damage to your wooden furniture.

Water damage to hardwood floors can be a bit more challenging. Unfortunately, in many cases of a water loss or flooding, hardwood flooring can end up being a costly material to remove, and ultimately replace.

When the flooring gets wet, the wood absorbs the water and begins to swell and warp. Even if the water is only on the surface, it can seep in through the cracks and loosen the glue holding the flooring to the ground.

Depending on the type of water, you may want to clean it up yourself or call the technicians at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County. We use specialized drying equipment and industrial grade dehumidifiers to remove the water and moisture as quickly and efficiently as possible. It important to remove the water quickly and dry the flooring. The timing could potentially save the hardwood flooring in the long run and prevent mold growth.

Any kind of water damage can be a difficult task to handle. Luckily, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is here to help with specialized equipment and training. We believe in restoring as opposed to replacing, and we have the expertise to get the job done correctly! We are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Give us a call! (330) 392-6355

SERVPRO Assists Commercial Building Owners

Desktop with a calculator, a pen and a small chalkboard with the word insurance written in yellow Taking the time to meet with your agent to review your coverage will help you decide if your policy is still adequate.

This month is National Preparedness Month on the calendar. This of course is just a reminder that being prepared is key to responding effectively and efficiently to commercial property losses.

One way to stay prepared is to have an annual check-in with your insurance agent. Taking the time to meet with your agent to review your coverage will help you decide if your policy is still adequate. As your business, facilities and assets evolve, the question becomes…are you fully covered?

Insurance companies have many endorsements you can add to a basic commercial policy that helps cover the inconveniences left from the severe weather we have in Northeast Ohio.  The fact is, the weather can produce damages that we may never have thought possible.

There are extremes such as high winds and hail damaging roofs and tearing off shingles and fascia. Also, torrential down pours that overpower drainage systems and cause sewer and drain back ups in many basements.

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County works around the clock to make sure our restoration services are exactly what is needed for your commercial property.

We offer a special service called “Emergency Ready Profile” (ERP) for any commercial client. This no cost service is a digital profile of their facilities on a smart phone or tablet that helps businesses respond quicker and become more prepared for a storm event.

No matter what damage may be done or at what time of day it occurs, the ERP App on your phone keeps you connected to help. SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is right at the tip of your finger.

How to Stop a Beeping Fire Alarm

9/19/2019 (Permalink)

white smoke detector with red light lit and smoke coming from the bottom If your Trumbull County home needs mitigation from fire damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County.

When you hear a fire alarm going off in your home or business, what is your first thought? Probably, “oh no, where’s the fire?” But you’ve searched your home or business and everything is safe and there’s no sign fire of fire or smoke. A beeping fire alarm usually signals an emergency – usually.

What about when there is no fire, but your alarm continuously beeps? It turns out, there could several reasons that your alarm may be annoying you, rather than warning you.

  1. Reset Needed

Before you go out buying a new system or even new batteries, you may want to reset your detector first. If you are unsure about how to reset your smoke detector please refer to this video for additional help.

  1. Batteries

One of the more common causes for non-emergency related alarm beeping is the need for new batteries. If the battery in your detector is not operating at full power, the detector cannot function properly and may beep to signal that the battery is dying.

  1. Environmental Interference

If resetting and replacing the batteries still don’t silence your smoke detector, try to clean the device of any dust or other particles. Dust, cobwebs, and even temperature can cause your detector to beep. Try blowing air your detectors to remove any unwanted debris and then repeat step 1 and 2 as necessary.

As you can see, there are a few potential culprits responsible for the incessant beeping taking over your home. If none of these solutions fix your problem with your smoke detector, it may be time to replace it. The lifetime of a smoke alarm is typically between 8-10 years. If you don’t remember when you bought your smoke alarm, you can always check on the back for the manufacturing date.

Having a reliable detector makes acting quickly during an emergency possible and provide peace of mind. If your Trumbull County home needs mitigation from fire damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County. We have a team that you can trust and a proven restoration process. We make it “Like it never even happened.”

Commercial Cleaning Services in Trumbull County

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County offers an array of services that meets the needs of any commercial business

When choosing a commercial cleaning service, one of the factors to consider is the extent of services offered by the cleaning and restoration company. The decision is an important one because you are entrusting your business’s appearance to someone else.

Some companies use janitorial staffing for (general) surface cleaning like vacuuming or wiping down a restroom. Deep cleaning of the carpets, walls, air ducts and more, are not the type of services building owners have on their mind everyday.

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County offers an array of services that meets the needs of any commercial business seeking full service cleaning. From the ceiling to the floor, SERVPRO can do more!

Available Services:

Carpet Cleaning

Heavy trafficked areas can leave carpets with built-up soil that can become unsightly and difficult to clean. Carpets trap dust, dirt, and other bacteria, creating a potentially unhealthy environment for employees. SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County utilizes a few techniques to clean carpets and upholstery.

Bonnet Cleaning, preconditioning and rinsing, as well as dry cleaning, are all gentler ways of getting deep to the dirt. Hot water extraction is used to target the tougher areas.

Floors

Floors endure high traffic and grime buildup as well. Sweeping and mopping are sufficient for surface cleaning but are not always adequate in removing heavy dirt. We clean tile and hardwood flooring by safely sanitizing the surface and grout with state of the art equipment and 'environmentally green' cleaning agents.

Preparing for a Weather Emergency

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

Extreme weather can occur with little warning

Preparing for a Weather Emergency

Extreme weather can occur with little warning. For most, feelings of fear and anxiety slowly creep in. If property damage is a result, that can even make matters worse. Everyone needs to be prepared.

For example:

Organize your finances. When it comes to preparing for weather emergencies, knowing your financial situation is as important as a fully charged flashlight. Financial documents that are up-to-date, in one place, and portable can make a big difference during this stressful time.

Know your insurance. Find out if any home insurance policy will pay for temporary shelter. You may need to replace clothing, furniture, or other items if you are affected by a hurricane, tornado, or other severe weather.

Floodproof your home. If you've been a victim of a hurricane in the past, or you live where storms frequently occur, your home may become flooded. It may be wise to purchase flood insurance and have a flood response plan. The FEMA website has more information.

Plan for your pets. If you are like most pet owners, your pet is an important member of your family. Animals also are affected by disasters just like us. Having a plan for your pet can insure their safety.

More tips...

The items listed below should be in your home at all times for any unforeseen disaster that may occur.

  • First Aid Kit
  • Unused Candles
  • Flash Light and Extra Batteries
  • Water Bottles & Packaged Food
  • Battery Powered Radio

Candles are extremely important to have in your home at all times. Know exactly where to locate them to reduce the anxiety of walking around in the dark.

A first aid kit should always be in your home, whether it is to prepare for a disaster or just to treat common injuries.

Flash light and extra batteries are essential during and after a storm just in case you need to evacuate your residence.

It is difficult to predict how long the electricity will be unavailable, which is where battery powered radios come in handy.

Water bottles and packaged food will also be needed in case household appliances are not functioning.

Additional weather disaster planning tips can be found here

If your property has incurred any damages after a storm or if you're in need of cleanup call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County at (330) 392-6355 to minimize any inconvenience in your life and restore your property back to "Like it never even happened."

Water Loss Tips for Niles, Ohio Residents

Sewer Backup from Basement Drain

Understanding Water Loss

Whenever SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County responds to a water loss, ultimately the consumer's first concern has to do with the cause of the loss. Confirming this information can make a big difference when it comes to insurance coverage and the cost of mitigation. The differences in water damage coverage and sewer/drain backup coverage may be confusing at first, but is actually pretty self explanatory.

Water damage is the 'kind' of damage and sewer/drain is a 'cause' of the damage. They are easy to confuse if you don't read policies every day.

Water damage covers a broken hot water tank or a pipe break. Back up sewage coverage is for when sewage backs up into your house. This type of loss is much worse than a broken fresh water pipe for reasons of contamination.

Water Damage coverage can have many different causes, but the most common is a "sudden" and "accidental discharge" of water from things like burst pipes, faulty appliances, etc. There are also secondary damages to consider such as water getting into your house after a storm blew part of your roof off or a tree branch knocked through a window. A slow leak dripping over time would be excluded as a secondary loss because it is considered a maintenance issue.

A whole separate category of water loss would be floods, which is generally excluded unless you have purchased flood coverage. What distinguishes a 'flood' is that the water has pooled on the ground outside of your house before coming in and causing damage. Aside from the normal sense of flooding, there is also water from a downspout which enters the basement due to bad drainage or a clogged drain.

Avoiding Sewer Back Up

Prevention is always a best practice even if you do have coverage to pay the claim. There are several things you can do to prevent sewer back-up from destroying your home and property:

  • Install sump pumps and check regularly to ensure they are in working order
  • Have backflow valves installed in your home
  • Ensure that your property has good drainage sloping away from your home
  • Have plugs ready for drains and toilets
  • Keep your eaves, troughs and downspouts clean to allow for proper drainage

Most homeowners are not aware that sewer back-up is not a standard part of a homeowner’s insurance policy. You should verify whether or not you have coverage right away, before finding out you do not have it when your home is filled with sewer water.

If you don’t have this coverage on your policy, look for one that does include it and consider adding this coverage to your current policy. The cost of this additional coverage is low when you consider the peace of mind it provides.

Unique Window Board-Up Method in Warren, OH

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Here is an 'inside the home' view of SERVPRO's unique Window Board-Up method

Fire damage can be overwhelming when disaster strikes. The result usually leaves the homeowner with a smoke and soot filled home. The feelings and stress level during this time can be overwhelming and leave the homeowner with several questions racing through their head. Who do I call? What do I do first? Who can I trust?

Calling SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is the answer to all of these questions. SERVPRO can help the homeowner with the fire restoration process from start to finish.

In order to properly secure and preserve the structure, SERVPRO’s Tension Board-Up method is used. This unique process increases security for a home or business owner after the fire loss has occurred. The tension method also decreases damage to the window frame during the rebuilding and restoration process.

To preserve the window frame, a sheet of oriented strand board (OSB) is placed on the exterior of the window. Carriage bolts are then drilled through the OSB directly into the 2x4's that are placed in the home's interior side of the window frame. The 2x4's are measured and cut to fit the width of the interior portion of the window frame. The carriage bolts are not drilled directly into the window frame. This results in a decreased amount of damage to the structure of the home or commercial building. The window is then secured from the inside to increase security.

SERVPRO Stages Material Properly

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County remodeled this basement after a water loss

At SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County we guarantee the quality of our work and ensure the best possible finished product in a variety of different ways.

One way this is achieved is by making sure that materials we use in the rebuild phase have ample time to acclimate to their surroundings. When a material acclimates, its physical temperature changes to match that of the room around it.

This is important for a few reasons. Not only is the material easier to work with, but it helps to eliminate the possibility of problems arising after everything is installed.

Also, materials will expand and contract naturally as its temperature changes. If materials are installed before they are fully acclimated, and are still expanding and contracting, gaps can form between sheets of drywall, floor boards can buckle, and paneling can get a rippling effect. These types of problems not only look terrible, but they ruin the materials so they can't be fixed and must be replaced.

Different types of materials need to acclimate for different periods of time. All materials must acclimate for a minimum of twenty-four hours,  but some take much longer. For example, Hardwood plank flooring takes three to four days and snap-lock laminate flooring takes a minimum of forty-eight hours.

As a local restoration/construction company, we take pride in providing the best service for our customers and community. Our Construction Project Managers are always available to answer any questions you may have about your home or business project.

Differentiating the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County for your "no cost" preparedness plan

Have you ever heard one of your employees say, "I know we have a binder for that, it's here somewhere." Those words are routinely heard in the commercial business world when referring to the storage methods of plans and processes.

Emergency Ready Profiles (ERPs) are amongst the list and are routinely found in a bulging, three-ring binder. It wouldn't be reasonable to permit employees to enter a burning building or to wade through flooded rooms to retrieve the emergency response binder.

The SERVPRO ERP is different. It's a digitized plan that travels with those who need it most. The immediacy of accessing emergency response plans from your mobile device helps minimize  business interruption and provides the critical information needed to begin mitigation services. It contains the necessary information and serves as a quick reference to important aspects of your building.

It seems most disasters occur in the middle of the night or while you're away on vacation. Nevertheless, an ERP from SERVPRO allows you to respond immediately from wherever you are. Action steps can begin with a quick phone call to a SERVPRO close by and the work of mitigating the damage can begin.

The latest research suggests that as much as 50% of businesses close down following a disaster. Of those that survive, the majority had preparedness plans in place. A "no cost" assessment of your facility can be done by contacting SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County at (330)392-6355.

Christmas Tree Fire Cleanup Company in Warren, Ohio

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Cause of Christmas Tree Fires

A common reason is due to electrical problems. There have been many instances where an extension cord has failed while under pressure of an object and caused a fire.

Prevent Christmas Tree Fires

With real trees there are many precautions and care that needs to be given. Watering the Christmas tree daily is necessary to prevent water level dropping below the cut end of the tree. Dry trees are the biggest culprit in these fires because they can burn faster than newspaper, causing the fire to spread rapidly.

Safety Tips

  • Making sure string lights have no loose connections
  • Use a single extension cord that is not longer than needed
  • Use UL- approved lights
  • Turn off lights before bed
  • Water the tree daily
  • Keep candles away from the tree.

Ice Dam Roof Leak Commercial Building Cleanup and Restoration

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

What is an Ice Dam?

An ice dam is a accumulation of ice in a gutter or on the edge of the roof that forces water against the grade of the roof and into a home or business.

Ice dams can also form around skylights, vents or valleys in the roof.

Ice dams form when heat from inside the structure rises through the ceiling and warms the roof. Snow falls on the heated parts of the roof and melts. The melted snow then flows down the roof until it reaches the part of the roof that is lower than 32°F. The water freezes and begins to form an ice dam.

As more snow melts and refreezes, the ice dam can grow larger and pools behind the large wall of ice.

Over time the water works its way through the shingles or other roofing materials and flows through the roof decking down through the ceiling, interior walls and other parts of the structure.

If left unresolved, the water damage can lead to microbial growth.

If you notice an ice dam and water intrusion to your home or business this winter, call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County 330-392-6355

Our highly-trained cleanup & restoration professionals have the experience and resources available to help make ice dam damage "Like it never even happened."

Holiday Fire Prevention Tips

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County if you experience a fire or smoke damage emergency this holiday season 330-392-6355

There are several ways to prevent a fire around the holidays just by eliminating hazards. Keep your holidays merry & bright with these safety tips:

Christmas Trees, Lights and Electrical Safety

  • Inspect lights before plugging in and examine for damage. Throw away any kinked, frayed, worn or severed light strands
  • Never overload a circuit
  • Turn off all lights and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed - consider using a timer to automatically turn off the lights each night
  • Use a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) where water and electricity can potentially mix. (Your GFCI outlet will have a test and reset button on the front)
  • Water your Christmas tree daily to prevent the tree from drying out and easily catching on fire

Space Heaters, Safety Detectors and Electric Cords

  • Use space heaters carefully and as temporary heating - do not leave space heaters running or plugged in unattended and do not leave them on while going to sleep
  • Test your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors (which should be placed in each bedroom, hallways and each level of the home including the basement)
  • Only use heavy-duty extension cords that are grounded for fire safety. Never run extension cords under rugs or in areas where they can cause a slip, trip or fall.

Candle, Chimney & Fireplace

  • Candles account for two out of every five home fires each year! Never leave the room with a candle lit. Consider using a flameless, battery operated candle
  • Fireplaces and chimneys should be inspected and cleaned by a professional every year
  • Keep your fireplace clear and free of debris by cleaning the ashes after each fire

Always have a fire extinguisher handy on each floor and plan for an emergency. Having a plan prepared can prevent injuries and accelerating the process of leading everyone back to safety.

If you experience fire or smoke damage to your Warren, Ohio home or business this holiday season, call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County 330-392-6355

Warren Ohio Winter Storm Safety Checklist

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Winters in Northeast Ohio can be brutal and pose the risk of a winter storm.

The CDC offers great tips to stay safe during a winter storm:

Heat Your Home Safely

If you plan to use a wood stove, fireplace, or space heater, be extremely careful. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and remember these safety tips:

  • Use fireplaces, wood stoves, or other combustion heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside and do not leak flue gas into the indoor air space.
  • Have your heating system serviced by a qualified technician every year.
  • Do not burn paper in a fireplace.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation if you must use a kerosene heater.
  • Use only the type of fuel your heater is designed to use—don’t substitute.
  • Do not place a space heater within 3 feet of anything that may catch on fire, such as drapes, furniture, or bedding. Never cover your space heater.
  • Never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water.
  • Never leave children unattended near a space heater.
  • Make sure that the cord of an electric space heater is not a tripping hazard but do not run the cord under carpets or rugs.
  • Avoid using extension cords to plug in your space heater.
  • If your space heater has a damaged electrical cord or produces sparks, do not use it.
  • Store a multipurpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher near the area to be heated.
  • Protect yourself from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by installing a battery-operated CO detector and never using generators, grills, camp stoves, or similar devices inside the house, in basements, in garages, or near windows.

Light Your Home Safely

If there is a power failure:

  • Use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns rather than candles, if possible.
  • Never leave lit candles unattended.

Use Generators Safely

Generators should be located at least 20 feet from any window, door or vent -- preferably in a space where rain and snow does not reach them.

  • Never use an electric generator indoors, in the basement, inside the garage, or near open windows or the air intake of your house because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Plug in appliances to the generator using individual heavy-duty, outdoor-rated cords.
  • Do not use the generator or appliances if they are wet because of the risk of electrocution.
  • Do not store gasoline indoors where the fumes could ignite.

Cook Safely

  • Never use a charcoal or gas grill indoors. The fumes are deadly.

Conserve Heat

Some gas-fueled heaters, such as vent-less gas fireplaces, require some ventilation. Otherwise, if you don’t need extra ventilation, keep as much heat as possible inside your home.

  • Avoid unnecessarily opening doors or windows.
  • Close off unneeded rooms.
  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  • Close draperies or cover windows with blankets at night.

Monitor Body Temperature

Infants

Infants less than one year old should never sleep in a cold room because they lose body heat more easily than adults. Follow these tips to keep your baby safe and warm during the extreme cold:

  • Remove any pillows or other soft bedding. These can present a risk of smothering and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • Dress infants in warmer clothing such as footed pajamas, one-piece wearable blankets, or sleep sacks.
  • Try to maintain a warm indoor temperature. If not, make temporary arrangements to stay elsewhere.
  • In an emergency, you can keep an infant warm using your own body heat. If you must sleep, take precautions to prevent rolling on the baby.
Older Adults

Older adults often make less body heat because of a slower metabolism and less physical activity. If you are over 65 years of age:

  • Check the temperature in your home often during extremely cold weather.
  • Check on elderly friends and neighbors frequently to ensure their homes are adequately heated.

Keep a Water Supply

Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes rupture. When very cold freezing temperatures are expected:

  • Leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously.
  • Keep the indoor temperature warm.
  • Improve the circulation of heated air near pipes. For example, open kitchen cabinet doors beneath the kitchen sink.

If your pipes do freeze, do not thaw them with a torch. Instead, thaw them slowly by directing the warm air from an electric hair dryer onto the pipes.

If you cannot thaw your pipes, or the pipes are ruptured, use bottled water or get water from a neighbor’s home. As an emergency measure, if no other water is available, snow can be melted for water. Bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute will kill most microorganisms or parasites that may be present but won’t remove chemical pollutants sometimes found in snow.

Eat and Drink Wisely

Eating well-balanced meals will help you stay warmer. Do not drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages because they cause your body to lose heat more rapidly. Instead, drink warm, sweet beverages or broth to help maintain your body temperature. If you have any dietary restrictions, ask your doctor.

If you experience a power outage during a winter storm and encounter water or fire damage as a result, call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County for immediate cleanup & restoration response! 330-392-6355

Mold Company in Warren, Ohio

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

Mold has the potential to cause health effects and can spread through your property in as little as 48 hours. SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County understands mold and mold growth and has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

The Mold Remediation Process

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our “typical” process:

  1. Emergency Contact - (330) 392-6355

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

  1. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

  1. Mold Containment

Our professionals use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

  1. Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our Professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

  1. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. We’ll use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. It may be necessary to remove and dispose of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, to remediate heavy mold growth.

  1. Cleaning Contents and Belongings

We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and disinfect your belongings. We’re also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

  1. Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. The restoration step gets your home or business back to normal.

Smoke Damage Cleanup Company in Girard, Ohio

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your commercial property, causing hidden damage and odor.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Does your Warren, OH Home Have a Water Damage Mold Problem?

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your Warren area home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Ice Dams in Austintown, Ohio

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

How Do Ice Dams Form?

Usually after a snow storm there is a pile of snow sitting on the roof above your attic. After the weather warms above 32 degrees Fahrenheit to melt the under layer of the snow it causes the top layer to form into a mound of ice.

Damages They Cause:

After the ice dam reaches its full capacity, the melted water begins to seep underneath the shingles along with dripping into the insulation and down to the ceilings.

How to Remove the Ice Dams?

Removing ice dams can easily lead to damages even if extremely careful. To efficiently remove the ice dams call a professional to prevent damages to your shingles.

Prevention:

To keep your home safe try one of these tips-

A simple prevention method is simply scraping the snow off of the roof the day it falls.

Another way to prevent ice dams is by installing heated cables before the winter begins.

Soot Tags after Fires in Nies, Ohio

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

Soot Tags Formation

Soot tags occur from a synthetic/petroleum based source burn. During a fire smoke and soot circulate throughout the house and the heat moves toward cool air when trying to equalize the temperature. In the areas with less circulation the soot tags will begin to form and can look like soot on spider webs.

However, soot tags are just chains of soot that gather in the areas with low circulation that look like webs. These can occur immediately or over time and reoccur even after dusting them off.

Prevent Soot Tags

Stay away from spraying water on the area to clean it because it will smear and stain. To help prevent this from happening, service your furnace annually to ensure it is working properly to help deal with soot. The best way to remove these soot tags are to contact your local SERVPRO in your Trumbull County area.

Contact us if you are dealing with soot at (330)392-6355 and follow us on Facebook to stay in touch.

2 members of our storm headed down to Houston for a second time to continue to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Although our storm team already packed their bags and headed to Houston in our SERVPRO fleet once before, they decided to head BACK down to Houston and continue to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

2 weeks after our team came back, we received a call from a customer who needed our assistance as soon as possible. When we got the call, two members of our storm team decided to assist this victim in need. Once arrived, they were faced with massive water damage and performed mitigation to a commercial business in need. Although the property damage was devastating, our team finished the job quickly and made the owners feel like their damage never even happened.

Upon their return, Trumbull County and the surrounding area was hit by massive winds and rains causing great damage to the area. Our storm team heard the call once again and, this time, helped our hometown victims in need.

Preventing Thanksgiving Fires in Warren, OH

11/16/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your home safe this Thanksgiving with some useful safety tips!

Is it your first time hosting Thanksgiving this year or are you still new to cooking Thanksgiving Dinner?

Before you start to brine your turkey and prepare for your meal, it is important to educate yourself on the dangers of home fires of Thanksgiving.

According to the National Fire Protection Association Fire Analysis & Research Division, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. Unattended cooking is also the biggest factor in these fires. Follow the following safety tips to make sure your Thanksgiving is disaster free!

Cooking Safety Tips

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires.
  • Check on your turkey frequently. Turkeys can burn easily.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer, or mixer do not come in contact with any water OR especially children.

Turkey Frying Safety Tips

If you opt out of cooking your cooking in the oven traditionally and decide to fry it, follow these safety tips.

  • Stay away from the house. Set up your turkey fire more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away to prevent this from happening
  • Find flat ground. The oil must be steady and even to ensure safety.
  • Use a thawed and dry turkey. Extra water from a frozen turkey will cause your oil to spill over and if it spills onto a burner, a fire will immediately start.
  • Monitor the oil temperature. Fire do not have their own thermometers so keep one on you at all times!
  • HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER READY AT ALL TIMES!

Penguin Pride in Youngstown, OH

10/30/2017 (Permalink)

YSU students Sarah Mathews and Elaina Berry pose with their SERVPRO water bottles.

On Oct. 28, we had the opportunity to once again sponsor water bottles at an event that attracted nearly 1,000 people. This time, they were all "penguins!"

Local college Youngstown State University's mascot is the Penguin and for this year's Homecoming they sought out to break the Guinness World Record for Most People Dressed Like Penguins. Students, alumni, and families flocked to the event, wanting to be apart of this record breaking event. If YSU were to break the record, all participants would have their name in the next Guinness Book of World Records for 2018.

Participants loved their SERVPRO water bottles. Many took photos and posed with their water bottles for us. This was also a good way for the community to understand who we are as well as what we do.

We loved being able to assist with this event and want to congratulate YSU for "unofficially" breaking the world record with 972 Penguins strong!

Halloween Fire Safety in Niles, Ohio

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

Halloween is only days away. But did you know that decorations, costume choices, and candles inside jack-o-lanterns can cause home fires?

From 2011-2015, U.S. fire departments reported an estimated average of 840 home structure fires per year that began with decorations. The fires also caused 36 civilian injuries and nearly $11.4 million in direct property damage per year.

Below are some safety tips to keep your family and trick or treaters safe this halloween

  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns.
  • Watch choosing costumes with trailing fabric. If an open flame were near, the flame could watch on the fabric.
  • Watch your decorations! Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper can catch fire very easily. This is why it is important to not use any type of open candle whatsoever since decorations are easily flammable. Instead, use other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep exits of your home clear from decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Most importantly, MAKE SURE ALL SMOKE ALARMS ARE WORKING IN YOUR HOME!

If an accident does happen this Halloween, we provide top of the line fire restoration services to make your fire feel "Like it never even happened." Give us a call at 330-392-6355 to schedule your appointment.

Toxic vs Non-Toxic Mold in McDonald, OH

9/25/2017 (Permalink)

Having mold in your home isn't very glamorous. However, did you know that mold can be both toxic and non-toxic? Luckily for us, toxic mold is very uncommon but non-toxic mold is the most common and actually comes with health risks as well.

Toxic Mold

As mentioned previously, finding toxic mold in your home is very uncommon. However, some molds produce mycotoxins that have toxic effects. Mycotoxins do not harm adults but are toxic to the elderly and infants. There is truly no way to find out if your mold contains mycotoxins unless you get your mold tested. Mold can also be "toxic" if you have extreme allergy problems or severe forms of asthma.

Non-Toxic Mold

Non-toxic mold is the most common type of mold. It is not only an annoyance in your home but can also effect your health. If you have allergy like symptoms, with no allergy history, you should get your home tested for mold. Cladosporium is found in non-toxic mold and it typically a black or "pepper-like" substance. This usually grows on the back of toliets, showers, painted surfaces or air ducts.

If your home experiences any type of mold, we remove it and restore the area the mold infested! Give us a call today to set-up a visit!

Gutter Cleaning in Warren, OH

9/18/2017 (Permalink)

Checking and cleaning out your gutters for leaves at least once a week lowers your chance of interior or exterior water damage to your home.

Fall is finally upon us which means leaves begin to change and we can enjoy the fresh foliage.

However, with foliage comes falling leaves. Not only do leaves cover our lawns but they also cause gutters to clog. Although clogged gutters can be an annoyance at times they can also be harmful. Gutters are meant to prevent water damage to the interior or exterior of your home. If gutters go untouched, there is a strong chance rain water can leak into your home.

Have you ever cleaned your gutters before? If not, here are a few helpful tips to make the process a lot easier.

  • Wear long sleeves and gloves. You never know how dirty the leaves actually are up there!
  • Use a sturdy ladder. Self- explanatory. You would be surprised how many people are harmed from falling off ladders while cleaning their gutters! Also find a ladder with a standoff stabilizer (also called ladder horns). Certain ladders can damage and bend gutters and using ladder horns lowers the risk for damage.
  • Scoop it up! Don't feel like using your hands? Pick up a child's sandbox shovel from the dollar store.
  • Make clean-up easier by using a plastic tarp. Raking and throwing away leaves is already a time consuming task as it is. Take the leaves from your gutter and throw it on a plastic tarp. When you're done gather it up and throw it in a large trash bag.
  • Rinse, Rinse, Rinse! You might think you're done after you remove the leaves from your gutter but you actually aren't! Take a garden hose and rinse out the gutters and downspouts to get rid of any excess dirt. Doing this also helps you spot any leaks in your gutters!

Fire Escape Planning in Niles, OH

9/18/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial or house fires can happen at any moment. But when disaster strikes, do you have a plan of action for escaping and notifying first respond services? Here are a few helpful tips and steps you can take to create an escape plan as well as help prevent a fire from happening.

  • Install smoke detectors on each level of your home and near sleeping areas. It is also important to test the batteries monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. Changing the batteries every Daylight Savings Time is also another tip to maintain working smoke alarms.
  • Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two ways to escape from every room in your home. This is a lot more difficult than you think. Using a template helps with these. These are available online.
  • Practice your fire escape plan at least once a year. Designate a meeting place outside that is a safe distance from your home. Also practicing different crawling and stop, drop, and roll techniques helps!
  • Program Police and Fire Department numbers in your phone. Dialing911 is a given but having your local police and fire department's numbers in your phone helps as well.

When to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Frozen Pipes

2/9/2017 (Permalink)

Use a blow dryer to warm pipes

During winter in your Newton Falls area pipes often freeze during winter months. When temperatures get down around 20 degrees and sometimes above if the pipes are exposed to cold windy air usually due to cracks in walls pipes will freeze. When water in the pipes freeze it expands into ice putting pressure on the pipe and can cause it to burst leading to a broken pipe and a flood in your home. Pipes that are metal or water lines to things like pools, sprinklers, and interior pipes can burst no matter what the water is flowing through if it’s frozen. To prevent pipes from freezing it’s important to keep garage doors closed if water supply is in garage, open cabinets and doors, let water drip in facets, and keep it warm in the area where pipes are. If frozen pipes occur, keep the faucet open while warming the pipe; apply heat to the section of pipe, but avoid using open flame devices. To avoid this problem keep pipes warm. In the event that your pipes burst and flooding occurs, call the professionals to extract the water and make it like it never even happened at (330)392-6355. Also follow us on Facebook for updates and promotions.

Soot Tags

2/6/2017 (Permalink)

Soot Tags

Soot Tags

Soot tags occur from a synthetic/petroleum based source burn.  During a fire smoke and soot circulate throughout the house and the heat moves toward cool air when trying to equalize the temperature. In the areas with less circulation the soot tags will begin to form and can look like soot on spider webs. However, soot tags are just chains of soot that gather in the areas with low circulation that look like webs. These can occur immediately or over time and reoccur even after dusting them off. Stay away from spraying water on the area to clean it because it will smear and stain. To help prevent this from happening service your furnace annually to ensure it is working properly to help deal with soot.  The best way to combat these soot tags are to contact your local SERVPRO in your Newton Falls area.

Contact us if you are dealing with soot at (330)392-6355 and follow us on Facebook to stay in touch.

Christmas Tree Fires

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

Christmas Tree Fires

The holiday season tends to have the most house fires. Some of these fires are started by Christmas trees. There are many ways that Christmas tree fires get started. One most frequent reason is due to electrical problems. There have been instances where an extension cord has failed while under pressure of an object and causes a fire. With real trees there are many precautions and care that needs to be given.  Watering the Christmas tree daily is absolutely necessary because if the water level drops below the cut end of the tree no water can be absorbed. Dry trees are the biggest culprit in these fires because they can burn faster than newspaper, causing the fire to spread rapidly. One in 31 Christmas tree fires is deadly. Keep your family safe in your Girard home by making sure string lights have no loose connections, using a single extension cord that isn’t longer than needed, use UL- approved lights, turn off lights before bed, water the tree daily, and keep candles away from the tree.

Pipe Bursts

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

Pipe bursts

There are a few reasons pipes can burst, but the main one is because of freezing conditions.  Other reasons pipes many burst are due to age, misuse, or damage. When pipes burst they cause damage to property, homes, and sometimes entire areas of a town and roads for days. The most devastating part of pipe bursts aren’t the cost of the repair or even the loss of water, it is the damage that the water does to the homes. In one day the water accumulation in a house could be 9,600 liters of water. Forest Fire

12/5/2016 (Permalink)

How forest fires are caused

A forest fire is an uncontrolled fire occurring in nature. Most forest fires are man made. A heat source combines with dry leaves and grass which release volatile gases and combines with oxygen in the air and starts the burn which creates more heat and gas and the fire spreads. The steeper the terrain the faster the fire burns because of the hot air rising into the other trees.

Affects of Wildfires

Forest fires cause damage to houses, offices, vegetation, and anything in its way. Cities have to spend millions on fighting them with aircraft, personnel, chemicals, and logistics. These fires wipe away almost all organic value of soil. However, most plants easily grow back and have good recovery. Some plants even thrive after a wildfire.

Proper Disposal of Fats, Oils, & Grease

11/28/2016 (Permalink)

Properly Dispose of Fats, Oils, and Grease

Properly disposing of fats, oils, and grease is important to avoid clogging sewers and having them back up into yards and streets. Be a good neighbor in your Cortland city and properly dispose of butters, sauces, dressings, and other oil based products that can clog sewers.

Problem

Pouring oils and grease down the drain cause sewer pipes to clog which leads to an overflow in neighborhoods and can run into nearby drinking water such as rivers and streams. These oils and grease back up in sewers creating globs that get stuck to the walls and cause the sewage backups that create health problems.

Proper Disposal & Alternatives

  • Pour oils and grease into covered containers and then throw away
  • Throw food scraps in garbage
  • Reuse most oils for cooking and baking
  • Reuse bacon grease

Happy Cooking! Follow us on Facebook for more helpful tips!

Local SERVPRO out of Austintown Cleans Up After Hurricane Matthew

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO recently had the opportunity to assist flood victims of Hurricane Mathew in North Carolina.  Countless homes and properties were destroyed after the storm leaving civilians with flooded homes and no power. Senator Capri S. Cafaro sent a letter explaining her appreciation for a local business like SERVPRO willing to help those in need locally and in other states. She expressed how SERVPRO’s willingness to help those in need in the community should be seen as an example to all.

Although we are locally owned, our team was able to assist in the restoration process since they have prior experience with storm and flood restoration. Our team was eager to provide services to the victims of Hurricane Mathew to help them get back to their daily routines. Flooding is common in Ohio and could happen in your Canfield or Boardman home. It is important to be prepared and call for professional help immediately after a water damage.

Cleaning Braided Rugs

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Braided rugs must be cleaned with the right set of instructions because they can easily be destroyed. These rugs are made to last a long time, but attract a great amount of dirt which requires proper deep cleaning. If you a have braided rug in your Cortland, Ohio home then follow the set of instructions below to clean your braided rug:

Before the cleaning process check to see if the rug is washable. After you have checked to see if the rug is suitable to be washed, shake it out to remove as much dust and dirt particles as possible.

  • Small Rugs
  1. You can air dry the rub, but for a speedy outcome tumble dry on low
  2. Set in a mesh laundry bag to wash in a gentle cycle with cool water.
  • Large Rugs
  1. Lay rug on concrete floor.
  2. Use a carpet cleaning foam to rub in a circular motion with a sponge.
  3. Rinse and completely dry before using carpet.

Let the Quarter Decide

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Power outages are common during a storm, which means the electricity in a freezer is not keeping the food cold. It can be difficult to determine if a power outage occurred if you were not present during the storm. One away to determine whether the food in your freezer needs thrown out is by using a quarter. Freeze a cup of water before evacuating your home and put a quarter on top of the frozen water. If the quarter is sunk to the bottom of the cup after the storm, you should dispose all food stored in the freezer. The quarter sinking to the bottom means the food in the freezer has defrosted and it should be thrown out. This is a great method to determine if your food went bad in your McDonald, Ohio home.

Clean Kitchen Utensils with Salt

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Salt can remove some of the toughest stains if used correctly. Using salt is a natural and effective way to clean your Warren, Ohio home.

Cutting boards are filled with many germs due to the residue after cooking. An alternative to disposing a cutting board is cleaning it with salt and lemon.

  • Sprinkle salt on the wooden cutting board
  • Rub the salt with the side of the cut lemon

Glass coffee pots are far from stain resistant and the cleaning process can be challenging if you are not following a correct cleaning procedure. Simply adding salt to your cleaning process can effortlessly remove the stains.

  • Apply a few tablespoons of salt inside the coffee pot
  • Fill the pot with hot water and let it soak for an hour
  • Rinse and dry

Grease can build up in your sink after time which makes it difficult for liquid substances to pass through. Salt can effectively remove the grease in your sink.

  • Pour salt down the drain and run hot water for 2 minutes

Problem: BLACK SHIRT AND WHITE DEODORANT.

Solution: … just change it, you ruined your night.

JK!! Just run to your laundry room to grab some dryer sheets and start rubbing in a circular motion. This will absorb the deodorant stain.

Problem: Your heels/flats SMELL.

Solution: Put baking soda into a small breathable baggie and let it sit in your choice of footwear.

Problem: The makeup that you intended for your face only… also made a visit to your clothes.

Solution: Apply some of the shaving cream that was destined for your legs onto the stained area. Let this sit for 10 minutes so the stain will dissolve in the shaving cream and you can wipe it carefully with a light colored cloth. Complete the process by washing it off with cold water.

Essential Fire Safety Instructions

Most of us are informed of what actions to apply immediately during a fire, but it is important to enlighten children of what to do. When a fire occurs it is important to stay low at all times until you are out of the endangered premises. Staying low on the ground will keep you from inhaling too much smoke. Your first priority should be evacuating the structure immediately and making sure everyone else has an understanding of the main goal. Sometimes it is impossible to leave the endangered area, but it is essential to understand to never hide under a bed or in a closet. If you have a phone on hand you can call 911 and let them know you are trapped. If any apparel that you are wearing catches on fire, do not panic! Just immediately stop, drop, and roll on the ground with your hands covering your face.

Tips to Survive the Dark

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Candle Crayons

Break the point off the candle and use the paper label as a wick. Light the paper label at the end of the crayon; the crayon should last about thirty minutes.

Crisco Candles

If you need a long lasting candle substitution, then using Crisco is the answer. This alternative will last for thirty days! Open a can of Crisco all vegetable shortening and insert a wick substitution, such as a mop strand or even a shred of a cotton t-shirt.

Gum Lighter

If you do not have a way to light these candle substitutions because there is no form of electricity or a lighter available, you can create a small fire with gum wrapper and a battery. Use the foil wrapper and a AA battery to create a flame. Tear the wrapper and let the foil touch the positive and negative battery terminals so the wrapper can catch fire.

Fire Safety Tips

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

There are several ways to prevent a fire just by eliminating hazards. Watch out for extension cords and multiple wires that are hidden behind carpets and curtains. Overloading Circuits is a common mistake especially for families who possess multiple electronics because they do not split the devices and run a different circuit.

There should always be an operating fire extinguisher and smoke detectors installed in all homes. It is important to have a plan prepared for emergencies with people you live with. During a tragic incident it can be difficult to immediately take action and handle the situation. Turn Your Grill into Nonstick

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

During the summer holidays most people host outdoor events such as cookouts and parties which require a grill. The most unappealing part of grilling is cleaning the spots after. Occasions like the fourth of July and Labor Day will keep a host engaged throughout the event and are incapable of becoming occupied with cleaning when there are guest and multiple activities taking place. There is a solution to avoiding sticky spots of food residue and it requires an onion! The onion should be cut in half in order to rub the cut side on a heated grill grate. This method will turn your grill grate into a non-stick appliance and reduce the amount of cleaning after your grilling experience. The procedure is cost efficient and effective which will leave your grilling experience less time consuming.

  1. Fill a glass bowl half way with water.
  2. Cut up a citrus fruit that you prefer. Ex) lemon, orange, grapefruit.
  3. Put the fruit into the bowl and microwave the bowl for four minutes.
  • This should moisten the microwave and loosen the sticky food particles.
  1. Wipe down the microwave with a wash rag.
  • If there are still spots remaining, microwave the bowl for 4 minutes.

When to Schedule Your Cleaning

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

There objects and appliances that need to be cleaned monthly for a fresh and hygienic atmosphere. Staying consistent with a cleaning schedule will prevent allergies and sickness that may occur from bacteria and germs. Appliances such as washers, ovens, and microwaves only have to be cleaned once a month unless extreme food spills take place. Cabinets should be cleaned because they collect dust and become visible after a month. There are certain items in your home that only have to be taken care of seasonally. This seasonal process can be done in the spring. This is the time to search through your cabinets and look for expired food to prevent molding from occurring. Comforter and duvets should also be washed along with windows, blinds, and curtains. Washing all of those items will create a fresh room that does not contain dust or germs.

Types of Household Molds

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Cladosporium is the most common type of mold we see in our households. You probably have seen it on your food such as bread. The mold is a green, black, or grey color. This type of mold is harmful with people who have allergies or asthma. It could cause allergic reactions and shortness of breath for individuals who are diagnosed with asthma. Aspergillus is a type of mold that usually occurs in moist areas in your house and grows very quickly. This mold usually appears on the walls of your basement; most people ignore it and do not take action because they are not aware of the infections it causes. Alternaria is a type of mold that does not need a lot of water to grow. This form of mold is usually found after a flood and it should be taken care of by professionals such as SERVPRO.

3 Water Stages

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Sewage backups should not be taken light considering that can be very dangerous by causing severe illness. The contaminated water and bacteria could lead to infectious diseases if not taken care of immediately. There are three different types of stages of water, three being the most hazardous. The first stage is clean water which is usually from a broke water line, but this stage can quickly turn into stage two or three if untreated. Stage two is usually from toilet or dish overflow and is considered gray water. Stage two may include bacteria and viruses and needs to be treated immediately to prevent stage three from occurring. Stage three water is extremely hazardous and contained with unsanitary water filled with bacteria; if this water is ingested it could lead to life-threatening illness or death and all contact to this water should be avoided. We are a 24/7 hour service and if any emergencies like this occur we are able to help here at SERVPRO.

Beware of Water

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

It is obvious that water and electricity are a dangerous combination. There are many ways to prevent many dangers that may occur from water and electricity. Keeping your appliances away from water except for washing machines and dishwashers can prevent fires from starting. One little drip onto a power cord can cause a home fire. Another simple suggestion is to refrain from touching electricity with wet hands to prevent electrocution. To inhibit electrical accidents, refrain from putting portable heaters in a bathroom. As tempting as it might be to carry your portable heater with you on a winter morning, this practice could cause a severe incident if any water were to spill. It is detrimental for your safety and well being to unplug all appliances from the outlet after finished to prevent any fires. If any fire incidents happen due to electricity or water, call SERVPRO to restore all of your damages back to "Like it never even happened."

5 IMPORTANT THINGS WE FORGET TO HAVE IN CASE OF A STORM

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

It is awfully common to overlook the simplest necessities in case of any emergency, especially a storm! The item listed below should be in your homes at all times for any abrupt disaster that may occur.

  1. Candles
  2. First Aid Kit
  3. Flash Light and Extra Batteries
  4. Battery Powered Radio
  5. Water Bottles & Packaged Food

It is extremely important to make sure there are candles available in your home at all times. I usually have seasonal candles around at all times, but having them all light up at once can be an overwhelming smell. I like to keep a box of plain unscented candles specifically tailored towards an emergency.  A first aid kit should always be in your home, whether it is to prepare for a disaster or just to treat common injuries. Flash light and extra batteries are essential during a storm even though there might be candles available because the candles should be in one room to avoid a fire. Normally it is challenging to predict how long the electricity will be unavailable, which is where battery powered radios come in handy. Water bottles and packaged food is also efficient in case of all household appliances not functioning. If any damages occurred after a storm due to water damage or in need of a cleaning service, call SERVPRO to minimize any inconvenience in your life and restore all of your damages back to "Like it never even happened."

Got Baking Soda?

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Baking soda can be used in several different procedures to clean. Most people who bake are familiar with its capability to cause baked goods to rise. Although it is a great ingredient for baked goods, baking soda also an excellent component for cleaning. The element can be used to clean your child's toys by mixing 4 teaspoons of baking soda, with 1 quart warm water in a spray bottle. After the baking soda has dissolved, spray the mixture on to the toys. After you have finished this step, rinse all of the toys with water and leave them to dry. Baking soda can also be used to remove those unwanted coffee stains.

Have you ever rushed to work or class in the morning and spilled coffee all over your new clothes you were excited to wear? Well this dilemma has unfortunately happened to me several of times, but do not panic! There is a solution to remove the stains and you do not have to throw out your new clothes. Just mix 1 tsp of baking soda with 1 cup of water and use a clean cloth to gently scrub to bring your clothes back to new.

How Clean is Your House?

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

For many of us cleaning our houses is a daily task, whether it is vacuuming or even sweeping. But we probably only clean 60% of the dirt without even being aware. Imagine how much build up that could lead to. Dirt is usually hidden in our own carpets, filled with dust mites, mold, and hair along with several other allergens. Vacuuming will not remove all the bacteria and dirt, but highly trained professionals at SERVPRO are able to remove noticeable dirt and even buildup and that is not visible.

There is more to a clean house than just carpet cleaning, there are areas you would never even think of! If you are wondering why your house is not cooling or heating quickly and efficiently, then it is probably because you are due for an air duct cleaning. This will improve the quality of air in your home.

3 Essential Storm Aphorisms to Live By

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

1. “When thunder roars, go indoors”

This one is a given, you might have heard this phrase as a child from your parents while you were playing in the rain. Yes many of the best youthful memories occurred while playing in the rain, but as adults it is difficult to enjoy the rain since we are more aware of their damages.

2. “A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water”

As pretty as the snow is during the winter, we cannot dismiss the issues that arises throughout a snow storm. Snow is freezing water and water has not always had the best track record of affecting houses positively. The freezing water eventually melts and causes several damages to your gutters and down-pipes.

This is where you call SERVPRO to help clean and restore your damages.

3. “When it snows, you have two choices: shovel or make snow angels”

Making snow angels after a snow storm can be exceptionally tempting, but the snow around your house needs to be shoveled. I know it is common to just shovel the drive way, but shoveling around your house can be extremely beneficial. The snow around your house will eventually melt and seep into your basement if not shoveled.

Sometimes damages may occur no matter how many ways you try to prevent them, but luckily SERVPRO specializes in water cleanup and restoration.

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

It can be very hard to prevent mold from occurring especially in Ohio since is it known as the rainy state. The awful leaks in the roof and the floods that appear out of nowhere in your basement, or even the rain entering through the window can lead to mold. Who knew a little rain can create such inconvenience.

Not only does mold create an ugly scenery and an unpleasant smell, but scientists are claiming it can affect your health!
